Moz Alternative: Domain Authority Is Not a Ranking Factor

Moz gave the industry Domain Authority, and then spent a decade explaining that Google does not use it. That tension is a good way into what Moz Pro is genuinely for, and what it is not.

The short version

  • Moz Pro runs $49-299/month monthly, or $39-239 on annual billing - the cheapest entry into a full platform.
  • Domain Authority is a Moz model that predicts ranking strength from the link graph. It is useful for comparing sites and is not a signal Google reads.
  • Site Crawl covers the standard technical checks with generous page limits, especially on the higher tiers.
  • As with every platform in this category, the output is a report. Nothing in it changes your site or verifies that anything was fixed.

What does Moz Pro cost in 2026?

Starter is $49 a month, Standard $99, Medium $179 and Large $299, with roughly 20% off on annual billing. That makes Starter the cheapest serious entry point of the major platforms.

For a small site that wants rank tracking, a crawler and link data in one place without a $250 commitment, Starter is a reasonable purchase and undercuts the alternatives meaningfully.

Is Domain Authority a Google ranking factor?

No. Domain Authority is a Moz-built model that estimates how likely a domain is to rank, trained on the link graph. Google does not calculate it, receive it, or use it. It is a comparison metric, not a signal.

That does not make it useless - it makes it useful for a specific thing. If you are trying to judge whether a link prospect is worth pursuing, or whether a competitor is realistically beatable this year, a single comparable number across sites is genuinely convenient.

It becomes harmful the moment it is treated as a target. Teams that optimise for DA end up chasing links from high-DA sites with no topical relevance, which is precisely the trade search engines weigh least. A relevant DA 30 link in your category beats an irrelevant DA 70 one, and DA cannot see the difference.

What is Moz genuinely better at?

Price-to-capability at the entry tier, link metrics that are widely understood by clients, and one of the best-documented educational libraries in the industry. For a team learning SEO, Moz's material remains the sensible starting point.

The Beginner's Guide and Whiteboard Friday archive taught a generation of practitioners, and the tooling is designed around that same explain-yourself instinct. If a stakeholder needs to understand why a number moved, Moz makes that conversation easier than most platforms.

Where does it leave you?

In the same place as every other platform in this category: holding a report. Site Crawl finds the faults, tells you they matter, and then the entire chain of ticketing, engineering, deploying and verifying is yours.

If you want DA specifically - because a client asks for it, or because your link prospecting workflow is built on it - buy Moz and be clear-eyed about what the number is. If what you need is for the fault list to actually shrink, no amount of authority reporting produces that.

Frequently asked questions

Is Moz cheaper than Semrush and Ahrefs?

At the entry tier, yes - $39-49 a month against $117-129. The higher tiers converge, and the databases behind Semrush and Ahrefs are deeper. Price is a real advantage at the bottom of the range.

Should I care about my Domain Authority score?

As a rough comparison against competitors, mildly. As a target to optimise, no. It is a model of your link profile, and improving the model is not the same as improving the profile.

Can I use Moz for technical SEO?

Site Crawl covers the standard checks competently. As with the others, the limit is not detection - it is that nothing in the product makes the change or proves it landed.
